Sri Lanka have had an ordinary run at the 2023 World Cup. After three matches, they are the only side in the tournament without a win, and are languishing at the bottom of the points table.
They were already without the injured Wanindu Hasaranga, who had been accompanying them as a travelling reserve. From the third match, they have been without captain Dasun Shanaka as well, who has been replaced by Chamika Karunaratne. Kusal Mendis filled in as captain.
To boost the squad, Sri Lanka have added former captain Angelo Mathews and fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera the group as travelling reserves, but not full squad members.
A veteran of three World Cups, Mathews is 135 short of the 6,000-run mark, and has 120 wickets to boot. He averages a phenomenal 121.60 from his 11 ODIs on Indian soil at a strike rate of 97 – but none of that has been since 2017. In fact, since the pandemic, his four ODIs have yielded 35 runs, and he has not bowled in any of these.
From 44 ODIs, Chameera has 50 wickets at 33.16 and an economy of 5.39 an over. His only two ODIs this year, been against Afghanistan, have fetched six wickets.
Sri Lanka at the 2023 World Cup: Lost to South Africa by 102 runs at Delhi, lost to Pakistan by six wickets with 10 balls to spare at Hyderabad, lost to Australia by five wickets with 88 balls to spare at Lucknow.
