Shubman Gill has had to miss out on India’s first two matches at the World Cup due to a bout of dengue. There were concerns that he might not travel to Ahmedabad for India’s third game as well. However, in a promising sign for the hosts, their star opener seems to be on the road to recovery as he landed in Ahmedabad three days ahead of India’s match against Pakistan in the city on October 14.
Gill had to be hospitalized in Chennai after India’s first game against Australia there on October 8. He was kept under the supervision of the medical team and did not travel to Delhi, the venue for India’s second World Cup match against Afghanistan on October 11.
Ishan Kishan replaced Gill in the XI for the first two matches. While he had a forgettable first game against Australia, his World Cup debut, where he scored a golden duck, Kishan came back strongly with a run-a-ball 47 against Afghanistan in Delhi.

While it’s still unclear whether Gill will be available for India’s match against Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium, that he has started travelling with the team is a step in the right direction, indicating his comeback might not be far off.
Gill has been India’s highest run-scorer in ODIs this year, having scored 1,230 runs at an average of 72.4 with five half-centuries and five centuries.
In the Super Fours game against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, Gill came out all guns blazing, scoring a 52-ball 58 while opening the innings as he took on Shaheen Afridi.
India would be hoping that Gill is available for the Pakistan game. Having already won two games and looking high on confidence, Gill’s return will only add to the strength of the Indian side.
