Sachin Tendulkar or Steve Smith? Newly unveiled statue in Wankhede Stadium confuses fans

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

A grand statue of Sachin Tendulkar was unveiled at the Wankhede Stadium on the eve of the India-Sri Lanka game at the venue on November 1. However, the statue’s uncanny resemblance to Steve Smith has plenty of hilarious reactions among the public.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) unveiled a grand statue of Sachin Tendulkar in a colourful ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium on November 1, situated next to the Sachin Tendulkar stand. The statue depicts Sachin playing a lofted straight drive.

However, both the face and to an extent, the shot, seems to have an uncanny resemblance to those of Steve Smith, something that fans on social media didn’t take much time to spot. From various fake accounts masquerading as Steve Smith to fans, journalists, and others in the entire cricketing community, many chipped in to wonder about the newly installed sculpture.
