Reece Topley topples chair over in frustration, throws objects against dressing room glass after injury

by Katya Witney 2 minute read

Reece Topley vented his anger after having to leave the field injured against South Africa today (October 21), throwing a chair out of his way before slamming objects against the dressing room glass.

Topley was hit on the end of his index finger on his left hand during his fourth over of the powerplay against South Africa. Having received treatment on the field he attempted to carry on with his over before leaving the field to seek further assistance.

On his way off the field, Topley took out his frustration at picking up another injury on any inanimate objects in his path. After aiming a kick at an unseen object on the ground, he encountered a chair as he went to walk up the stairs to the dressing room. He swiped at the chair with his right hand, sending it toppling over and out of sight.

Topley then jogged up the stairs to the England dressing room. Once inside, he continued to vent his anger. He could be seen through the glass front of the room throwing objects at the glass and storming around hitting whatever he could find off tables.

The injury was the second time in as many matches Topley had to leave the field injured. In England’s previous match against Afghanistan, Topley spent time off the field after hurting his knee diving for a ball on the boundary. Although he spent a significant period of time off the field after the incident, he was able to return to bowl later in Afghanistan’s innings.

Topley is no stranger to injuries, having spent much of his career on the sidelines and missed several crucial international series and competitions. He was originally selected in England’s squad for last year’s T20 World Cup, before picking up an injury days before the tournament began.

Topley’s injury problems have been so frequent that he has admitted considering whether he should quit the game all together.

Although clearly angry and fearing the worst after his latest scare, Topley returned to the field over half way through South Africa’s innings and claimed two more wickets.
