Babar Azam resigned as Pakistan’s all-format captain on November 15 (Wednesday) after he failed to lead the team into the semi-final of the 2023 World Cup.

Babar was first given the leadership role in 2019 and led the team in 20 Tests, 43 ODIs and 71 T20Is. He won 10 Tests and 26 ODIs but his biggest contribution was in the shortest format, where he had a win percentage of 59.15, leading his team into the semi-final of the 2021 T20 World Cup and the final last year. Pakistan also became the No.1 ODI side for the first time under Babar, when they climbed to the top spot this May.

Overall, Babar scored 15 hundreds as a skipper, averaging over 50 as a leader in Test cricket, and more than 60 in ODIs. His batting in T20Is, however, was always under the scanner, with the opener averaging 37.84 as leader at a strike rate of 129.49.

However, question marks were raised over his captaincy after Pakistan failed to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup, with his leadership against India in the Super Four, in particular, coming under the scanner. Pakistan also looked uninspired in the World Cup and reports of a rift in the camp, with the side allegedly divided into two factions, working against Babar.

The 29-year-old announced his resignation from the post on Wednesday and there were plenty of reactions. His last match as captain, against England in the World Cup, ended in a 93-run defeat.
