‘Most awkward presentation of all time’ – Pat Cummins left standing with World Cup by himself before trophy lift

Pat Cummins left standing by himself with World Cup trophy
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Pat Cummins was left standing awkwardly by himself with the World Cup trophy waiting for his teammates after he was presented with the cup on stage in Ahmedabad.

Cummins was presented with the trophy by India prime minister, Narendra Modi, and Australia deputy prime minister, Richard Marles. After the pair had jointly given Cummins the trophy and posed for photos, they walked off the stage, leaving Cummins by himself.

The Australia captain smiled awkwardly as he watched the leaders leave the stage shake the hands of the remainder of the Australia squad, waiting for his teammates to join him. Eventually, the rest of the Australia team were allowed onto the stage to celebrate their World Cup win. The incident generated a significant reaction on social media.

The actual presentation wasn’t the only part of the awards that didn’t run smoothly. The ceremony took place over an hour after Glenn Maxwell hit the winning runs. Many of the 90,000-strong crowd had already left by the time the trophy was exchanged.

The title is Australia’s sixth in men’s 50-over World Cups and their second time winning the tournament in India. Travis Head was named player of the match for his pivotal century, while Virat Kohli was named player of the tournament.

India went into the game unbeaten but came unstuck during their batting innings after losing three quick wickets in their first 11 overs. They managed to set Australia a target of 241 but were unable to break Head and Marnus Labuschagne’s 192-run partnership until only two runs were required to win.
