Bangladesh had a disappointing World Cup campaign, finishing eighth on the points table with two wins in nine outings – here are the player ratings for all of their squad members.

Litton Das – 5/10

9 matches, 284 runs at 31.55, SR: 80.22, HS: 76

Despite being Bangladesh’s batting lynchpin in recent years, Litton had a forgettable World Cup. Barring 76 (66) against England and 66 (82) against India, he was far from his best.

Tanzid Hasan – 2/10

9 matches, 145 runs at 16.11, SR: 95.39, HS: 51

Preferred over snubbed veteran opener Tamim Iqbal in the squad on the back of his Emerging Asia Cup exploits, Tanzid failed to live up to expectations. While facing India, the southpaw struck a stroke-filled 51 off 43 balls to notch up his only noteworthy score in the tournament.

Najmul Hossain Shanto – 4/10

9 matches, 222 runs at 27.75, SR: 76.81, HS: 90

After kicking off the event with an unbeaten 59 against Afghanistan, Shanto faded away in the subsequent matches with six single-digit scores on the trot. By the time he halted his miserable streak with a match-winning 90 against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh were already out of the competition. A lot more was expected from the vice-captain, as his failure to score regularly hampered his team’s chances.

Mahmudullah – 8/10

8 matches, 328 runs at 54.66, SR: 91.62, HS: 111 

Following his Asia Cup 2023 snub, Mahmudullah emerged as the sole bright spot of a brittle batting order, finishing as the highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in the World Cup. Coming in at No.6, he stroked a run-a-ball 111 against South Africa – his third in the World Cup – to provide something to cheer for in a humiliating 149-run defeat. A fighting 56 in a losing cause versus Pakistan was his other notable contribution to the team’s underwhelming batting returns.

Shakib Al Hasan – 6/10

7 matches, 9 wickets at 36.55, ER: 5.26, BBI: 3/30
186 runs at 26.57, SR: 82.30, HS: 82

Whenever Shakib struggles, Bangladesh struggles – an eternal story even when the veteran all-rounder is in the twilight of his career. He was far from being the performer he was in the 2019 edition, having lacklustre outings in both departments. His batting woes forced him to fly out to Dhaka halfway through the World Cup to consult his childhood mentor, Mohammad Salahuddin. To complicate things further, the Bangladesh captain had a pre-tournament feud with veteran ousted opener Tamim Iqbal.

Shakib started well with match-winning bowling figures of 3-30 against Afghanistan, had a plateau and finished off with a Player of the Match all-round performance of 82 (65) and 2-57 against Sri Lanka before being ruled out of the last game against Australia due to a finger injury.

 Towhid Hridoy – 4.5/10

7 matches, 164 runs at 32.80, SR: 78.09, HS: 74

After hovering between No. 5 and 7 positions without much success earlier, Hridoy smacked 74 (79) against Australia to spearhead the best batting effort for Bangladesh (306-8) in World Cup 2023.

Mushfiqur Rahim – 3.5/10

9 matches, 202 runs at 25.25, SR: 79.21, HS: 66

Mushfiqur couldn’t keep the tempo after a promising start with two consecutive fifties against England and New Zealand, failing to rack up an innings of substance in his next six matches. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter showed flashes of brilliance with his glovework. The flying effort to his left to dismiss Kusal Perera could end as the catch of the World Cup.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz – 5/10

9 matches, 10 wickets at 40.20, ER: 5.58, BBI: 3/25
201 runs at 22.33, SR: 79.44, HS: 57

Like Shakib, Miraz had his best days during Bangladesh’s sporadic tastes of victory. He took 3-25 with the ball to restrict Afghanistan to 156 before gunning down the target with a half-century. Against Sri Lanka, Miraz strangled the opposition with figures of 1-49, playing a role in his team’s second win.

Nasum Ahmed – 1.5/10

3 matches, No wickets, ER: 7.02
40 runs at 13.33, SR: 83.33, HS: 19

Nasum went wicketless despite playing three games and didn’t contribute with the bat either.

Mahedi Hasan – 4.5/10

3 matches, 6 wickets at 24.83, ER: 7.02, BBI: 4/71
17 runs at 16.50, SR: 45.20, HS: 15

In whatever limited opportunities Mahedi received, he performed reasonably well compared to his peers, though his economy left something to be desired. Against Australia, however, Mahedi went for 4.22 runs an over and was the only economical bowler of his side. Playing as a lower-order batter, he failed to chip in.

Mustafizur Rahman – 3/10

8 matches, 5 wickets at 79.60, ER: 6.06, BBI: 2/36

Mustafizur was a shadow of his former self from the 2019 edition. Contrary to the last World Cup in England, where he picked 20 scalps from eight matches to finish the tournament as the fourth-highest wicket-taker, Mustafizur only managed five from eight opportunities this time. He bowled well in patches but never looked like running through an opposition like he has in the past.

Shoriful Islam – 5/10

8 matches, 10 wickets at 40.90, ER: 6.32, BBI: 3/75

Shoriful was arguably the pick of the Bangladesh pacers. He had decent outings, notably a 2-34 against Afghanistan and a 2-51 against Sri Lanka, playing a part in his team’s only wins. The left-arm seamer should take this experience in his stride to continue with the fast-bowling renaissance Bangladesh have been a part of for some time now.

Taskin Ahmed – 4/10

7 matches, 5 wickets at 61.00, ER: 5.54, BBI: 2/43

Expected to spearhead the new-ball attack of Bangladesh, Taskin failed to deliver, and the result is well reflected in Bangladesh’s position on the points table. His unavailability during the important fixtures against New Zealand and India due to a shoulder injury proved costly for Bangladesh, sucking the nucleus out of their pace arsenal.

Hasan Mahmud – 3/10

2 matches, 3 wickets at 44.00, ER: 9.42, BBI: 2/67

Played against India and New Zealand in place of an injured Taskin and leaked plenty of runs despite managing three wickets.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib – 4.5/10

1 match, 3 wickets at 26.66, ER: 8.00, BBI: 3/80

Sakib sealed a World Cup berth for his impressive debut against India in Asia Cup 2023, in which he dismissed Rohit Sharma for a duck with just his fourth ball before finishing with 2-32 while bowling the last over to defend 266. Given an opportunity against Sri Lanka in the World Cup 2023, he scalped thrice to hand Bangladesh their second win.
