Watch: Jonny Bairstow out lbw to marginal leg-stump impact, starting England top order slide

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Jonny Bairstow was left fuming after a tight lbw call was upheld on review meaning that he had to depart in the second over of England’s chase.

Opening England’s chase of 285 in Delhi, Bairstow and Dawid Malan took three off Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s first over before Fazalhaq Farooqi came on to bowl the second. The first ball he sent down was full and swinging in late onto leg stump to Bairstow. The hard-hitting opener attempted a flick off his pads but missed the ball altogether, and was hit on his front shin.

Farooqi and the Afghanistan fielders went up in appeal immediately, and after several seconds of deliberation, umpire Rod Tucker raised his finger.

Bairstow opted to review almost immediately, and it was clear to see why. On close up replays the off and middle stumps could be seen at the point the ball hit Bairstow’s pads. It looked as if the ball would go on to swing past leg stump.

However, when DRS came up on the screen, the ball was umpire’s call on impact, and only hitting the stump by the tiniest flick of leather.

Bairstow had to depart for two and leave England 3-1, and was clearly unhappy with the decision.
