Rohit Sharma broke a number of records en route to his 63-ball hundred in the 2023 World Cup clash against Afghanistan, during which he also became the batter with the most ODI centuries in the competition.

The India skipper fell for a duck in the first game of the World Cup, against Australia, but turned it around in fine fashion, taking only 30 balls for his 53rd ODI fifty. India, needing 272 to win their second successive game in the tournament, raced to 100 in 12 overs, of which 79 were made by Rohit.
Rohit was on 551 international sixes before the start of the game. He hit his first here in the fifth over of the innings to go past 1,000 World Cup runs, in only 19 innings. He became the joint-fastest to reach the 1,000-run landmark, equalling David Warner, who had achieved it in the previous match against India on October 8.
Rohit also became the third-highest run-scorer for India in the history of men’s ODI World Cups, leapfrogging Sourav Ganguly (1,006). He is now behind only Sachin Tendulkar (2,278) and Virat Kohli (1,115 before today).
Rohit is also the highest six-hitter across all formats in international cricket. Before the game, Rohit needed three over-boundaries to overtake Gayle’s record of 553. He reached the feat in the eighth over, slamming Naveen-ul-Haq over deep square leg to secure an unbelievable record.
Rohit needed 33 balls more to reach his seventh World Cup hundred. His was the fastest World Cup hundred by an Indian, in only 63 deliveries, bettering Kapil Dev’s record, who had reached the landmark in 72 deliveries in the 1983 World Cup en route to his famous 175 not out.
It was also his seventh World Cup ton, the most among all batters. Before the game, he was tied with Tendulkar on six. He overtook the maestro in only 19 innings. Tendulkar had made six centuries in 44 innings.
