ICC World Cup 2023: Umpires and match officials for India vs Australia final announced

World Cup final
by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

The match officials for the final of the 2023 World Cup, to be held on November 19, have been announced. Here are the match umpires and referees for the game on Sunday.

India and Australia will meet in the final of the men’s World Cup after 20 years, on November 19 in Ahmedabad. Rohit Sharma’s team are on a 10-match winning streak, having won all their games thus far, while Australia have won eight in a row and made the final after defeating South Africa in the semi-final. India, on the other hand, defeated New Zealand.

The ICC has now confirmed the match officials for the clash, with Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough being in charge of the on-field proceedings. Both umpires were promoted to the international list of umpires on the same day, in 2009, and it will be the first time the two will officiate a World Cup final together.

Kettleborough has previously been in the middle for the final of the 2015 World Cup, alongside Sri Lanka’s Kumara Dharmasena for the game between Australia and New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The two officiated the semi-final of this tournament earlier this week. While Illingworth oversaw the India-New Zealand semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Kettleborough was in charge of overseeing the Australia-South Africa knockout game at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Kettleborough and Illingworth have also won the ICC Umpire of the Year awards previously, with the former winning the trophy from 2013 to 2015. Illingworth won the award last year and also won in 2019.

The two will be joined by third umpire Joel Wilson and fourth umpire Chris Gaffaney, while Andy Pycroft will be the match referee.
