ICC confirm no error in Rassie van der Dussen DRS dismissal despite ‘erroneous’ not out graphic

ICC confirm no mistake in Van Der Dussen dismissal despite wrong graphic shown
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Eagle-eyed viewers spotted a glitch during the DRS review of Rassie van der Dussen’s dismissal during the Pakistan-South Africa World Cup clash.

Ball-tracking initially showed that the delivery from Usama Mir would have missed the stumps, before changing to show that it would have just clipped the bails, staying with the umpire’s call, which was ‘out’.

The dismissal was an important one, with the Proteas and Pakistan playing out an engaging contest at Chennai. Having been set 271 to win, South Africa started quickly, but all of the top three were dismissed between 20 and 30 as Pakistan hit back. The last of those was van der Dussen, hit on the pads playing back to Mir.

He reviewed, with the decision a marginal one, and was sent on his way, but not before confusion erupted due to the technological malfunction. Screenshots of the moment circulated on social media, while the highlight video of the moment on the ICC website cuts out just before the ball-tracking projection is shown.

“In today’s match between South Africa and Pakistan, an incomplete graphic was erroneously displayed during the LBW review of Rassie van der Dussen,” said an ICC spokesperson. “The completed graphic with the right details was ultimately displayed.”

The wicket was also notable because Mir wasn’t initially named in the playing XI, instead called up as a concussion sub after an injury to Shadab Khan. He is, therefore, the first concussion sub to take a wicket in World Cup history.
