After electing to bat first, India were off to a blazing start, with skipper Rohit Sharma leading the charge. Averting the new-ball threat from Trent Boult and Tim Southee, India racked up 71 runs before Rohit departed in the ninth over for a blistering 47 off 29 balls, comprising four boundaries and as many sixes. Rohit’s opening partner Shubman Gill, was batting superbly as well but was forced to leave the field on 79 runs off 65 balls midway through his innings because of cramps.

Gill’s return to the pavilion made way for Shreyas Iyer, who scored a 70-ball 105, partnering with Virat Kohli, who notched up a record-breaking 50th ODI hundred to do the bulk of the scoring. A 20-ball 39 cameo from KL Rahul helped India stretch their total to 397-4 at the end of 50 overs.

While chasing the target, New Zealand kept the ball rolling with a chanceless 134 (119) from Daryl Mitchell, aided by Kane Williamson’s 73-ball 69 and Glenn Phillips’ 33-ball 41. However, once Mohammed Shami was on song, a likely victory was at a touching distance for India.

Shami ran through the New Zealand batting order, securing 7-57 with the ball, the best ever ODI figures by an Indian. The hosts entered the final on the back of a 70-run win victory, and are a win away from ending their 10-year trophyless streak in ICC tournaments.
