Watch Afghanistan v Pakistan highlights: In a 2023 World Cup match at Chennai, Afghanistan beat Pakistan for the first time in ODI history
Afghanistan won their first ever ODI against Pakistan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai. Opting to bat, Babar Azam top-scored with 74, while opener Abdullah Shafique made 58.
However, both batters took their time – Shafique struck at 77 and Babar at 80 – and after 40 overs, Pakistan were 191-4. It took some late hitting from Shadab Khan (40 in 38 balls) and Iftikhar Ahmed (40 in 27) to lift Pakistan to 282-7.
For Afghanistan, Noor Ahmad picked up 3-49, while Rashid Khan (10-0-41-0) and Mohammad Nabi (10-0-31-1) exploited the conditions well to keep Pakistan from getting away.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65 in 53 balls) and Ibrahim Zadran (87 in 113), Afghanistan’s trusted opening pair, then put on 130 for the opening stand in 127 balls.
At 190-2 in 33.3 overs, Pakistan might have sniffed a chance against Afghanistan’s unfancied middle order, but Rahmat Shah (77 not out in 84) and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (48 not out in 45) finished things in clinical fashion with an over to spare. Ibrahim was named the Player of the Match.
This was Afghanistan’s first win against Pakistan in the eighth ODI between the sides. In T20Is, the result stands at 4-3 in Pakistan’s favour.
Both teams now have two wins and three defeats from five matches. Pakistan’s superior net run rate (-0.4) have enabled them to cling on to the fifth place, while Afghanistan (-0.969) jumped four places to sixth.
