Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the 2023 World Cup with a broken finger which he sustained while batting during the clash with Sri Lanka on November 6 (Monday).

Shakib was struck on his left finger in his innings of 82 against Sri Lanka in Delhi but continued batting, it was revealed. An X-ray after the game confirmed a fracture, ruling him out of Bangladesh’s last World Cup game against Australia on November 11.

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers. He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint,” National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said.

“Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab,” he added.

The Bangladesh skipper was in the midst of controversy against Sri Lanka when he became the first captain to dismiss a batter ‘Timed out’. During the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings, Angelo Mathews was allegedly not ready to face his first ball within the stipulated two minutes as his helmet strap broke when he was taking guard.

Mathews immediately signalled to a substitute fielder for a replacement, during which Bangladesh, led by Shakib, appealed for a ‘Timed out’. The on-field umpires referred the decision to the third umpire after the skipper refused to withdraw his appeal, and Mathews was eventually ruled out, much to the batter’s dismay.

Shakib, who walked out to bat in the run chase of 280, at No.4, scored a crucial 65-ball 82 with the help of two sixes and 12 fours, winning the Player of the Match award. Along with Najmul Hossain Shanto, he took the team score from 41 to 210 before being dismissed by Mathews. The Sri Lanka all-rounder gave Shakib a send-off, looking at his watch as he walked away, referring to the ‘Timed out’ dismissal earlier in the game.

Bangladesh have been eliminated from the World Cup and are currently seventh on the table but a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy is up for grabs with the top seven teams besides hosts Pakistan qualifying for the event.
