CWC 2023: Kane Williamson broken thumb confirmed, Tom Blundell called up as cover

Kane Williamson fractured thumb
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Kane Williamson’s injury woes seem never-ending as he has been ruled out of the next few 2023 World Cup matches due to a fractured thumb. He suffered the injury after being struck by a direct throw during the New Zealand-Bangladesh clash on Friday (October 13).

Williamson, who was playing his first professional game in over six months after undergoing surgery for a ruptured ACL, had a memorable comeback against Bangladesh, making a fine 78 under swinging conditions. But the night did not end as expected after he had to retire hurt from copping a blow to his thumb.

The New Zealand skipper ran a tight single on 77 and could have been well short if Najmul Hossain Shanto had managed a direct hit. However, he ended up reaching the crease safely but his thumb bore the brunt of the dammage, as the ball came in and crashed onto his left hand.

Though Williamson continued batting, he retired hurt after two balls, with the batter saying his thumb was “fat and colourful” after the match. A day after the injury, it has been confirmed that he fractured his thumb and has been ruled out for the next few games of the World Cup.

However, he has not been ruled out officially, with the team hopeful he would be available for the last few games.

Tom Blundell has been called as cover for Williamson, but will not officially be a part of the squad.
