Bas de Leede entered the record books by becoming only the fourth men’s player to hit a 60 and pick a four-for in an ODI World Cup clash, achieving this feat during the Netherlands’ clash with Pakistan on October 6 [June 6].
De Leede had a memorable outing against Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup, picking up 4-62 with the ball in the first innings, which included the big scalp of Mohammad Rizwan when he on 68. It was de Leede’s second-best figures with the ball in the format, with the player having picked up a five-wicket haul against Scotland in the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers.
His bowling efforts helped bowl out Pakistan for 286, with the Netherlands facing a stuff challenge ahead of them. No team have ever chased as many against Pakistan in the men’s ODI World Cup.
De Leede also took on the responsibility in the second innings, top-soring with a 68-ball 67. Coming in at No.4, with the side at 50-2, the batter played a sensible knock, forming a 70-run partnership with Vikramjit Singh. The latter’s dismissal, however, led to a collapse, with the Netherlands eventually being dismissed for 205.
It was the second successive time that de Leede scored a half-century and picked up four wickets in the same game, the first time in ODI history that feat has been accomplished. In the last ODI that he played, against Scotland, he had made 123 runs and picked up 5-52, sealing Netherlands’ World Cup place in the process.
He also became the fourth player in World Cup history to achieve the double-feat in a single ODI game. Before de Leede, Duncan Fletcher (against England, 1983), the Netherlands’ Feiko Kloppenburg (against Namibia, 2003) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (against Zimbabwe, 2011) had made at least 60 runs and picked up a minimum of four wickets in a single men’s World Cup match.
De Leede is also a member of the rare father-son duo to have played in a World Cup, with his father Tim de Leede making his World Cup debut in 1996.
