Where is the Arun Jaitley Stadium located?

The Arun Jaitley Stadium (formerly the Feroz Shah Kotla) is located in the capital city of India, New Delhi. Maintained by the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), the address of the stadium reads – Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi, Delhi 110002.

When was the stadium in New Delhi built?

Established in 1883, the ground has undergone a series of changes. In 2009, the International Cricket Council (ICC) barred the ground from hosting international matches for a year: the fifth and final ODI between India and Sri Lanka was called off after 23.3 overs due to a dangerous pitch upon which the tourists were reduced to 83-5. The venue has come a long way since the reprimand and has been gearing up to host the 2023 World Cup.

What is the capacity and facilities of the Arun Jaitley Stadium?

The New Delhi stadium can accommodate 55,000 people during a match. Pillars block some seats, but the stadium has improved from the time when audiences would sit on concrete rooftops.

Nine pitches are in the main square, of which two are new, prepared by experienced chief curator Ankit Datta. Of of the nine, three will be used at the World Cup.

There are 37 corporate boxes in the DDCA Lounge, Bay Area, Hill ‘B’ and the BCCI Box. The Lounge has a bar-cum-restaurant that can cater to the spectators.

Apart from these amenities, state-of-the-art refurbished dressing rooms, drainage facilities, and floodlights have been built to host the World Cup 2023.

Records at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi?

Four matches were played in the stadium when India co-hosted the 2011 World Cup with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In a group B game between South and West Indies, AB de Villiers rose to the occasion and struck 107 off 105 balls. India’s only game in the venue was against the Netherlands, when Player of the Tournament Yuvraj Singh made 51 not out in 73 balls and picked up 2-43.

This is the venue where Sunil Gavaskar hit his 29th Test hundred, in 1983, to equal Don Bradman, and Anil Kumble took 10 wickets in an innings, in 1999.

At the 2023 World Cup, India will play against Afghanistan on October 11, the only game for the hosts at this venue.
