The 2025 Champions Trophy will feature eight teams. As hosts, Pakistan qualified automatically for the tournament.
India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Afghanistan are all guaranteed to finish in the top six (as are, somewhat inconsequentially in this context, Pakistan) at the 2023 World Cup, and have made it as well.
The other four teams at the World Cup, however, are all in contention.
Champions Trophy 2025 qualification criterion for England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Netherlands
England: Matches 8, Points 4, NRR -0.885
England’s last match is a day-nighter against Pakistan at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on November 11. If they win, they will qualify unless both Bangladesh and the Netherlands win by colossal margins.
If England lose, they will have to stay above Sri Lanka on net run rate, and expect any result but both Bangladesh and the Netherlands to finish above them. In other words, they can afford to finish behind one of them but not both.
Bangladesh: Matches 8, Points 4, NRR -1.142
Bangladesh’s requirements are roughly the same as England’s… yet not quite. Their situation is worse than England’s on two counts.
First, their net run rate is worse, though not by an enormous margin (-1.142 to England’s -0.885). And secondly, their last match, against Australia at the MCA Stadium in Gahunje, while on the same day as England’s against Pakistan, is a day match. In other words, England will have a clear understanding of what to do to stay above Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka: Matches 9, Points 4, NRR -1.419
Done with their nine matches, Sri Lanka are already below England and Bangladesh. They will have to hope for at least two of England, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands to lose by margins big enough to ensure their net run rates remain worse than Sri Lanka’s -1.419.
Netherlands: Matches 8, Points 4, NRR -1.635
The Dutch are at the bottom of the points table, and need to win by an enormous margin and expect one of Bangladesh and England to lose by a margin large enough for their net run rate to drop below the Netherlands’.
However, there is good news, for their match, at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, is the last of the group stage. They will have a target. At the same time, there is bad news as well, for they play India, who have won all eight of their matches.
