BAN v SL highlights: At Delhi, Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka for the first time in the history of the Men’s World Cup.

On November 6 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by three wickets with 53 balls in hand. Having lost all three matches – in the 2003, 2007, and 2015 editions – Bangladesh finally won a match against Sri Lanka at the World Cup.

It was not the only historical aspect of the match. Following an appeal from Shakib Al Hasan, Angelo Mathews became the first cricketer to be ruled timed out in the history of international cricket.

The matter escalated to a level where the Sri Lankan cricketers refused to shake hands, as per norm, with their Bangladeshi counterparts after the match.

Asked to bat, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 279. Pathum Nissanka (off 36 balls) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (42)n scored 41 runs apiece, but Mathews’ wicket left them reeling at 135-5.

Charith Asalanka’s 105 ball 108 (eight fours, five sixes) then helped them more than double that total. For Bangladesh, Tanzim Hasan Sakib claimed 3-80, Shorful Islam 2-51, and Shakib 2-57.

Dilshan Madushanka (3-69) took out the openers by the time Bangladesh reached 41 before Najmul Hossain Shanto (90 in 101 balls) and Shakib (82 in 65) added 169 for the third wicket, off 149 balls.

However, Mathews (2-35) and Maheesh Theekshana (2-44) struck twice each, while Madushanka also got his third wicket, and Bangladesh needed 11 when their seventh wicket fell. Towhid Hridoy and Tanzim then saw them home.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka now both have four points apiece, with one match in hand. Bangladesh’s slightly superior net run rate (-1.142) has kept them ahead of Sri Lanka (-1.16). Both are out of the semi-final race but are in contention for spots in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
