Australia are scheduled to play five T20Is against India starting November 23, four days after the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. They have announced the squad for the series, naming wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade as captain despite the presence of stalwarts like Steve Smith and David Warner.
The five matches will be played at Vishakhapatnam (November 23), Thiruvananthapuram (November 26), Guwahati (November 28), Nagpur (December 1), and Hyderabad (December 3).
Australia T20I tour of India: Team news
Members of the Australian team who are already in India for the World Cup will stay back following the conclusion of the tournament for the T20I series. Some of them include Smith, Warner, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis.
Wade’s appointment as captain is on interim basis as Mitchell Marsh, the last T20I captain for Australia has been rested from the tour. Having last played international cricket in the T20 World Cup last year, Wade will have his task cut out leading the Australian side in India.
All-format fast bowlers like Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins have been rested, along with leg-spinner Adam Zampa. Tanveer Sangha is the lone spinner in the squad, with Glenn Maxwell expected to take up the second spinner’s duties as he has been doing in the ongoing World Cup. They will also have Matt Short and Travis Head for spin support if required.
