Fielding first in the CPL 2023 final, Guyana had a dream outing with the ball, bowling out the Trinbago Knight Riders for a paltry 94 in 18.1 overs.

Trinbago began well, reaching 24 in three overs, before things began to fall apart for them. Mark Deyal went first, followed by Chadwick Walton and Nicholas Pooran.

By the end of the seventh over, half the Trinbago side was back in the hut, and the score read 44-5. Keacy Carty top-scored with a 45-ball 38 to take their score beyond 90.

Dwaine Pretorius was the wrecker-in-chief, taking 4-26 from his overs. Spinners Gudakesh Motie and Imran Tahir were nearly unplayable as they bowled spells of 2-7 and 2-8 from their four overs respectively.

In response, Saim Ayub gave the Guyana yet another good start. Keemo Paul was Ayub’s only teammate to be dismissed as they chased the target of 95 with nine wickets and six overs remaining.

Ayub, the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, fittingly finished off the run-chase with a six down the ground off Zaman Khan, and reached his fourth fifty of the season in the process as well.

He celebrated the winning shot by standing still, arms aloft, before making a circular motion with the bat in one hand as the Guyana players came rushing out of the dressing room.

Guyana have finished as runners-up as many as five times in the CPL. This marks the first occasion where they managed to cross the final hurdle.
