Watch: Durham coach Ryan Campbell was in disbelief on commentary, as Durham opener Michael Jones was given out lbw to Marnus Labuschagne despite the ball seemingly pitching wide of leg stump.
In Glamorgan’s second County Championship game of the year, Durham had reached 193-2 before Tea on day one, when Labuschagne struck. The part-time spinner was bowling off-spin – rather than his usual leg-spin from wide of the crease and around the wicket to Jones when he struck him on the pad.
As Labuschagne appealed, down on his haunches in front of umpire Tom Lungley, he finally raised his finger much to the disapproval of Campbell who happened to be on commentary at the time.
“I’m just going to say no,” said the former Australia international. “That can’t be out. Let’s have a look at the replay, that’s pitching outside leg by half a foot. I’m sorry, if you’re bowling off-spin that’s not spinning that cannot be out.”
It was Labuschagne’s first wicket of the County Championship season, having joined up with the squad ahead of Australia’s World Test Championship final clash against India in June and the Ashes series to follow.
“Mate, you can show that over and and over and over again, you can keep showing it but it’s impossible to be out,” continued Campbell. “The first rule lbw is if it pitches outside leg stump it cannot be out. It’s like, oh my God! – that’s two, it’s 2-0.”
Earlier in the game, Alex Lees had been given out lbw to a ball that looked likely to miss leg stump.
