Watch: Rehan Ahmed smashes extraordinary helicopter pull shot through mid-on to bring up half-century in County Championship

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Rehan Ahmed played a stylishly eccentric pull-shot in the County Championship today (April 28), as he fell ten runs short of what would have been his second first-class century in six matches.

England’s youngest ever Test player ended the first day on 38 not out and started quickly this morning to near his half-century. On 48 in just the fourth over of play, he shaped to pull the ball away into the leg side off Michael Nesser. But the short ball quickly gathered height as it near Rehan, forcing him to check the shot as it rose to near head height. He ended up playing the ball through mid-on, twirling his bat over his head to finish the shot.

The ball flew to the boundary to give Rehan his third fifty-plus score in first-class cricket in his sixth game.

He scored his maiden Championship century for Leicestershire on the final day of last season, hitting 122 off 113 balls against Derbyshire.

Today, he reached 90 off 129, batting at seven, before he was trapped lbw by Timm van der Gugten. When his wicket fell, Leicestershire were 345-6 in their first innings with Rehan the top scorer so far.

The teenage all-round sensation’s innings marks the continuation of a successful start to the season with the bat for Rehan. In Leicestershire’s opening match against Yorkshire, he hit 85 in the first innings and scored 33 against Derbyshire last week. He has also taken six wickets across the three innings he has bowled in so far.
