Young was making his debut for Nottinghamshire at The Kia Oval and had already made a century. As he approached 150, Will Jacks was brought on to try some off-spin to get the New Zealand international out.
Jacks bowled his first ball of the over wide outside off stump but angling in. Young tried to reverse-sweep the ball past the only slip, who was placed very fine. However, he misjudged the bounce of the ball and got an under-edge on it, which was taken by Foakes who was standing up to the stumps. For good measure, Foakes also whipped the bails off within a split second of taking the catch, Young’s back foot having dragged forward out of his crease.
The double-play caused momentary confusion between the umpires, who both raised their finger to give Young out. However, the dismissal was marked down on the scorecard as caught.
It was a timely reminder of Foakes’s sublime keeping skills after he was left out of England’s squad for the fourth Ashes Test match at Old Trafford. Jonny Bairstow has dropped six chances so far in the series and has also struggled with the bat. England could have opted to include both in the side and drop another player to try and make best use of Bairstow, but they opted to make no changes from their Headingley squad.
