Watch: Bees stop play! Leicestershire and Sussex forced to duck for cover in County Championship clash

The County Championship clash between Leicestershire and Sussex by a swarm of bees
by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Watch: A swarm of bees interrupted the County Championship clash between Leicestershire and Sussex. The game was subsequently halted as both sets of players and the umpires lay flat on the ground.

The incident occurred just before the fifth ball of the 96th over. Leicestershire had battled their way to 226-7 in the second innings when they encountered a group of unexpected visitors. Callum Parkinson and Harry Swindells were at the crease for the hosts, with Delray Rawlins bowling his left-arm spin. As soon as the bees swarmed the area, the players and the umpires, as a precautionary measure lay face-down on the ground. A few also saw the funny side, despite the game being tantalisingly poised.

Play eventually resumed as Leicestershire went past Sussex’s first-innings lead of 240 runs. However, rain played spoilsport a few minutes later, meaning that play was against halted – this time with Leicestershire leading by 13 runs but still a fair distance away from salvaging something from the game.
