Watch: Azam Khan put on a match-winning all-round show in a CPL 2023 match in Port of Spain yesterday (September 5), producing a stunning one-handed grab before starting his unbeaten 14-ball 27 with a first-ball six.

Trinbago Knight Riders posted 172-8 at the Queen’s Park Oval after Imran Tahir opted to bowl. Promoted to No.5, Akeal Hosein made a 35-ball 44 not out, while Lorcan Tucker (38 in 25) and Kieron Pollard (25 in 12) contributed as well.

For the Guyana Amazon Warriors, Odean Smith claimed 3-31 in his four overs.

Saim Ayub (62 in 43 balls) and Shai Hope (51 in 40) began the charge for Guyana. When Saim fell off the last ball of the 14th over, Khan walked out. Hope managed a four and a single off the first five balls of the next over, bowled by Hosein.

Guyana needed 51 in 32 balls at this point. Hosein bowled flat, but probably deviated slightly to the leg side, and Khan went down on one knee and swept hard. The power carried the ball over the ropes.

Hope lofted Waqar Salamkheil for two sixes in the next over. Khan responded by slamming Ali Khan for four past mid off, but Ali had his revenge, dismissing Hope.

That brought Shimron Hetmyer to the crease. In the next over, bowled by Sunil Narine, Khan placed a ball to the deep-third boundary, and slog-swept the next ball for six.

Hetmyer hit Ali for six again, but yet again Ali got the batter, and Khan was set to score four in the last over. Almost predictably, he hit Andre Russell for a straight six to end the match and finish with a 14-ball 29.

That blistering innings wasn’t Khan’s only contribution to the victory, however. Earlier in the game during Trinbago’s innings, Khan took a stunning one-handed grab behind the stumps to see the back of Nicholas Pooran. Keemo Paul had bowled a wide delivery which Pooran flashed at, getting a thin edge which flew to the left of Khan. He leapt horizontally with his arm outstretched, and somehow managed to cling onto the ball.

From start to finish, it was a stunning all-round performance.
