Watch: Ben Cutting forgot that the catch he’d taken of Dan Christian was off a free hit, and ended up throwing the ball in the air in celebration, leading to two extra runs for the batting team during a BBL 2021/22 game.

During the last over of Sydney Sixers innings against Sydney Thunder, Nathan McAndrew bowled a rib high full toss to to Christian which was duly dispatched for a four, and was also called a no-ball. The result was that the next delivery was a free hit, and Christian attacked the very next ball to cash in on the opportunity.

The wide yorker was deposited towards extra cover, where Cutting took a sharp, low catch. However, the fielder seemed to have forgotten it was a free hit, and chucked the ball into the air in celebration. The Sixers batters were alive to the opportunity that presented itself and quickly ran two runs.

One of the commentators went, “How can you not know what’s going on. I thought he was in the crowd there. I thought he was just doing it for the crowd!”
