Watch: The moment West Indies sealed a Test series win for the ages

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: West Indies beat Bangladesh in a thriller for the second Test in succession to secure a 2-0 series win.

Their 17-run win followed on from a three-wicket victory in the first Test, with the winning moment expertly narrated by veteran commentator Ian Bishop.

“It is a series victory for the ages,” said Bishop. “Given all that has been stacked against them, coming on this tour to Bangladesh, these men have achieved what many thought impossible.”

The game fluctuated throughout. West Indies were on the back foot early on, slipping to 116-4 before 80-plus scores from Nkrumah Bonner, Joshua Da Silva and Alzarri Joseph took them past 400. Bangladesh also rallied after losing four early wickets through half-centuries from Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, but still conceded a lead of over 100.

However, Taijul Islam led the home side roaring back, claiming 4-36 as West Indies were skittled for 117, leaving the Tigers needing 231 to win. The chase fluctuated throughout, with Tamim Iqbal’s brisk half-century driving the pursuit. The tourists struck regularly, but Mehidy looked to be guiding his side home, shepherding the tail expertly. He took his side within 18 runs of victory, but Jomel Warrican had the final say, with Mehidy edging to slip. Fittingly it was Rahkeem Cornwall, who claimed nine wickets in the match, who took the winning catch down low.

That wasn’t a patch on the first game, however, when a double century from debutant Kyle Mayers drove a chase of nearly 400.

The 2-0 win marked West Indies first in a multi-game Test series since their 2-1 defeat of England in early 2019. For Bangladesh, it was their first whitewash at home since 2012.
