Watch: Bangladesh players taunted Sri Lanka after they secured a 2-1 ODI series victory today (March 18), with Mushfiqur Rahim leading celebrations which continued the ‘timed-out’ controversy between the two teams.

In the deciding match of the series in Chattogram, held in searing conditions during the day, Bangladesh powered to a straightforward victory. After bowling Sri Lanka out for 235, Mushfiqur hit the winning runs in the 41st over, with Tanzid Hasan top scoring with 84.

Following the trophy presentation, the Bangladesh players gathered for a team photograph behind a ‘series winners’ board. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto placed the trophy down in front of the board, and signalled for a waiting Mushfiqur to come into the shot. Mushfiqur walked in front of the board with his helmet and showed it his teammates, who laughed and applauded before he took it away. The celebration is in reference to the timed-out incident during the 2023 World Cup, when Angelo Mathews became the first player in international cricket to be dismissed in the fashion during a league-stage game against Bangladesh. Mathews ran out of time to start his innings after experiencing an issue with his helmet before taking strike.

The incident has been a source of controversy between the two sides ever since. During the first T20I of the series before the ODI leg of the tour, Shoriful Islam signalled towards an imaginary watch on his wrist when he dismissed Avishka Fernando. After Sri Lanka won the T20I series, the entire side celebrated during their team photo with the same point to an imaginary watch on their wrists.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto then said Sri Lanka had yet to get over the incident.

“They showed the timed-out gesture, right? They haven’t moved on from the timed-out incident,” he said. “I think they should get out of it. They should stay in the present. We were within the rules [with the timed out dismissal]. They are in a frenzy about it. I am not too worried about it.”

Aside from the timed-out celebration, a fractious rivalry exists between the two sides which has led to a string of acrimonious encounters over the years. The sides will face each other again in a two Test match series which begins later this week.
