Watch: Days after dressing-room ‘ten-for’, Babar Azam comes within inches of taking Test wicket in first international over

Watch: Babar Azam came within touching distance of getting a wicket in his very first over in international cricket during the Bangladesh-Pakistan Test match at Dhaka.

Clearly buoyed by his ten-for during an intra-squad dressing room game, Babar carried forward his ‘form’ onto the field, as he brought himself on during Bangladesh’s first innings on Tuesday. He left onlookers stunned as he grabbed the ball to send down the 26th over, with Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam batting. It was his first-ever over in international cricket, but from the looks of things it might not be his last.

The Pakistan skipper got the ball to spin away and varied his pace to give a decent account of himself. Not only did Babar concede just one run, but he also came close to getting his first wicket for Pakistan. The fifth ball of his over spun away but Taijul was just about saved as his outside edge fell inches short of the fielder in the slips.

The on-air commentators were left impressed with his short spell as they discussed Babar, the bowler. “You’ve got to give it to him — pitching in the right areas, getting that turn.”

It was the last over of the day as persistent rain forced early stumps on day four of the Test match that looks headed for a draw.
