Shubman Gill survived a close lbw call with Bangladesh unable to review the not out decision due to a technical glitch during the third innings of the first Bangladesh Test on Friday, bef0re going on to score his maiden Test hundred.
The first ball of the 32nd over of India’s innings, sent down by Yasir Ali to Gill, turned back in sharply after pitching outside off. The India opener looked to play out the delivery on the back foot but missed and was struck on the pads. The Bangladesh fielders went up in a loud appeal but their shouts were turned down by the on-field umpire.
The hosts immediately went up for the DRS, but a technical glitch robbed the TV umpire of having a closer look. Only normal replays were available for viewing, which suggested that there was no bat involved. The sharp turn could have posed a problem for Gill, who was batting on 70 at the time, if DRS was available, but in its absence, the youngster survived. The third umpire conveyed the glitch to his on-field colleague, who was then asked to stick to his original decision.
If Gill had initially been ruled out by the umpire in the middle, he would have been dismissed with no DRS available to overturn the original call, similar to Devon Conway’s fate during the 2022 IPL this year. The Chennai Super Kings opener had to walk back after a questionable lbw call, which could not be reviewed due to a power cut.
India, who made 404 in their first innings, dismissed Bangladesh for 150, gained a lead of 396 runs by the tea break on day three of the first Test.
