Watch: Steve Smith was trapped lbw by Kemar Roach in the opening over of Australia’s first innings against the West Indies in Brisbane, continuing a disappointing run since moving up to open.

Australia bowled the West Indies out for 311 in the first session of Day Two in the day-night Test, but had to face five overs before the Dinner break. Smith, who has opened in both matches in the series following David Warner’s Test retirement, faced up to Roach’s first over with Usman Khawaja at the other end.

He got off the mark straight away, pulling a short ball and taking two, before he was beaten by Roach’s next delivery. Following another two dots, Smith drove well for four off the penultimate ball of the over, taking advantage of a half-volley.

The final ball of Roach’s over caused him more problems, however. The delivery was sent down to Smith from a wide angle over the wicket, tailing into his stumps. It pitched on a length and hit him on the pads, with Smith having shuffled across his stumps so that both middle and leg were exposed. Roach and the rest of the West Indies’ fielders appealed immediately, but the umpire was unmoved.

The West Indies decided to review, a decision which looked immediately vindicated when the replay showed the ball to have hit Smith just above the knee roll of his front leg, in front of middle and off. Ball tracking showed that the ball would have hit middle stump.

The wicket was the first of four to fall for Australia before the break and continues a disappointing start to Smith’s career as an opener. He’s returned scores of 12, 11* and six in his three innings at the top so far.
