Put in to bat first after losing the toss, Australia got off to an electric start courtesy of captain Mitchell Marsh. Coming in at No.3 in the second over of the innings, Marsh blazed 29 off 12 balls.
When he fell in the sixth over of the innings, it brought Glenn Maxwell to the crease at No.4. Maxwell stitched an 82-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Marcus Stoinis and an unbeaten 95-run fifth-wicket partnership with Tim David to take Australia to 241-4.
In the process, he equalled the world record of most individual hundreds in men’s T20Is which was held solely by Rohit Sharma previously. Maxwell scored his fifth century in the shortest format in international cricket, remaining unbeaten on 120 off 55 balls having hit 12 fours and eight sixes.
One of those eight maximums was an outrageous switch hit that landed well over 20 rows back into the stands towards point. On the second ball of the 13th over, bowled by left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, Maxwell switched hands and swatted a length ball over the off-side (now leg-side after the switch) boundary like only he can.
That six took him from 50 off 25 balls to 56 off 26 as he continued his assault for the remainder of the innings.
In the chase, the West Indies came out swinging but could only reach as far as 207, losing the game by 34 runs and going 0-2 down in three-match T20I series.
The third match will be played in Perth on February 13.
