Watch: Ricky Ponting supplied another example of his extraordinary skills of prediction, foreshadowing Alex Carey’s dismissal moments before it occurred.

Carey had played a key hand on the second day of the second Australia-West Indies Test, counter-attacking to bring the hosts back into the game. They had earlier slipped to 24-4 in response to West Indies’ 311.

However, Ponting felt that Carey was getting over-excited, and said as much as Shamar Joseph was running in to bowl. “It looks like his eyes are spinning a bit to me,” Ponting said. “He’s in overdrive at the moment, wants to hit every ball.”

“Just go a bit more defensive,” he added, in advice to West Indies. “Make him play a big shot from a good length ball.”

Joseph delivered, Carey attempted to pull a ball that wasn’t quite short enough, and found the man in the deep.

The day before, another Punter punt had come true scarily quickly. That time, he had suggested that Sinclair sitting on his bat at the non-striker’s end could come back to haunt West Indies, which it did as Alzarri Joseph was dismissed.

If Ponting starts reading out lottery numbers on day three, rush out and buy a ticket.
