Watch: ‘The perfect set-up ‘ – Pat Cummins follows bouncer with sizzling, bullseye yorker to remove Khaya Zondo

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Pat Cummins dismissed Khaya Zondo with the perfect yorker as Australia pressed for an unlikely victory on day four.

Rain has seen much of the third and final Test of the series at Sydney washed out and it was only after lunch on day four that South Africa were able to start their first innings, Australia declaring on 475-4. Usman Khawaja was the main man, making an unbeaten 195.

That declaration meant that Australia had, dependent on no further rain delays, 157 overs left in the match to bowl South Africa out twice, a feat they have managed in both previous Tests.

And sure enough, South African wickets steadily tumbled as they fell to 37-3 with all of Dean Elgar, Sarel Erwee and Heinrich Klaasen departing.

A recovery of sorts did emerge as Zondo took South Africa to 130 for the loss of just one more wicket, but his promising innings would come to an end on 39 thanks to one of the best yorkers you are ever likely to see.

Bowling from around the wicket, Cummins set the field for the short ball and delivered a bouncer which had Zondo ducking before bowling an inch-perfect delivery that struck Zondo on the back leg and could hardly have been plumber. Zondo reviewed in hope rather than expectation. But Cummins had his man.

It was the first of two wickets he’d take in a phenomenal spell of ferocious fast-bowling where he struck Marco Jansen on multiple occasions whilst also claiming the wicket of Kyle Verreynne who was caught at slip.
