Squads: Australia will host England for a three match ODI series in November, kicking off the series at the Adelaide Oval on November 17 – here is the complete squad list for both teams, including team news and player injury updates for AUS v ENG.
This is the first time the two teams will meet each other in the format for over two years, after Australia beat England 2-1 in 2020. The series is due to start just days after the T20 World Cup final which takes place on November 13 and in which England will take on Pakistan in their bid to hold both the World Cup and T20 World Cup titles at the same time. Defending champions Australia crashed out of their home tournament in the Super 12 stage after they suffered a heavy loss to New Zealand in their opening match and lost out on qualification thanks to a low net run rate.
England come off the back of an uncharacteristically poor run of results in ODI cricket, having failed to win either of their home series against India or South Africa in their home summer. They did record a world record ODI total against the Netherlands, however, scoring 498-4 with Phil Salt, Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler all scoring hundreds. Australia’s last outing in ODI colours in September brought a thumping 3-0 series win over New Zealand, they bowled their rivals out for just 82 in the second match of the series. It is a notable occasion for both captains, Pat Cummins takes over the ODI captaincy from Aaron Finch after his retirement, and Jos Buttler will captain his side overseas for the first time in the format.
Australia v England ODI series, 2022: Team news
Australia
Travis Head comes back into Australia’s squad to fill the gap left by Finch’s retirement, with Marcus Harris also selected as their reserve batter. The squad is set to be a full strength Australia side, with their three quicks in Cummings, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood all included and Scott Boland in as the extra seamer. Steve Smith and David Warner are also both in line to play as Australia’s ICC top-ranked ODI batters, both in the top-ten.
England
The visitors are missing a few star names from their squad, opting to rest their multi-format players ahead of their Test tour to Pakistan which kicks off in early December. Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Mark Wood are some of the notable names missing. Jonny Bairstow is still recovering from his freak golfing injury where he badly broke his leg during the English summer, while Jason Roy has been included after he was dropped from England’s T20 squad following his loss of form. James Vince also makes a return to the squad for the first time since 2021. There will be plenty of names from England’s T20 World Cup squad in the mix; Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Sam Curran also all featuring, Dawid Malan suffered a groin injury in England’s last World Cup Super 12 match against Sri Lanka which ruled him out of their semi-final victory against India, his fitness is an uncertainty going into the tour.
