Rohit Sharma came within milliseconds of an embarrassing run out on the fourth evening of the SCG Test between Australia and India.
With India facing an uphill battle in the fourth innings to secure either a draw or, even less likely, a victory, Rohit very nearly gifted the hosts with a wicket out the blue.
In the 17th over, Rohit mis-timed an attempted pull shot off Pat Cummins only to be struck on the pad. The ball trickled to Steve Smith in the slip cordon who then hurled it towards the striker’s end.
Rohit slowly stepped back into his crease seemingly unaware of Smith’s activity. Smith’s direct hit attempt struck its intended target but fortunately for Rohit, his foot landed inside his crease milliseconds before the bails were dislodged. You can watch the near miss for Rohit below:

Rohit overcame the scare to register his first Test half-century opening the batting in an away Test. After getting to a position of 71-0 on the fourth evening, India lost the wickets of both openers – Rohit and Shubman Gill – to leave Australia eight wickets away from nudging ahead in the fiercely competitive Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
