‘Shut up, Marnus’ – Australian fielders troll Labuschagne for on-field chat

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

There was a moment of mirth on day five of the Sydney Test when the stump mic picked up the Australian fielders poking fun at Marnus Labuschagne.

Shortly after Nathan Lyon broke through a threatening stand between Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant, the volume on the field increased significantly, with Labuschagne the most vocal in encouraging the off-spinner.

“That’s gonna rag with the new rocker,” he said. “That’s gonna rag with the new ball Garry [Lyon]. You’re gonna get both wickets here, Garry.”

At this point, the Aussie fielders had had enough. “Shut up Marnus”, said one. “Don’t leave it in the sheds, Marnus” was another comment.

Labuschagne’s next comment was partly obscured, but it contained the word ‘Stonker’.

“It’s amazing when you get a wicket, Painey, and Marnus starts talking again,” responded a close-in fielder. “You’ve got to be consistent Marnus, talk all day!”

The amusing moment had shades of an incident on day four, when Tim Paine and Matthew Wade could be heard teasing Labuschagne over derogatory comments made by Shane Warne and Andrew Symonds during a Kayo Sports broadcast while they believed they were off-air.

“When you’re 100 Tests in, and I’m commentating, it’s going to be exactly the same,” Paine said. “I’m going to be sitting there with Roy [Symonds] and Warnie saying the same thing. Hogpiling.”

“I’ll be coaching you in 10 years you’ll be playing and I’ll be saying, if you had taken Warnie and Roy’s advice back in the start, you wouldn’t be in this situation,” Wade added.
