Virat Kohli has taken one step closer to reaching 50 ODI hundreds as he notched up his 47th today in Colombo, building India’s innings with precision in the middle overs and then bringing out his trademark beast mode at the death.
Kohli resumed batting on the reserve day of India’s Super Fours clash against Pakistan at eight off 16 balls. With heavy rains lashing Colombo before the scheduled start of play on the reserve day as well, it looked as if another frustrating day might have been on the cards.
Play resumed after a delay of an hour and forty minutes and Kohli was right on the money. His first 21 balls fetched just one boundary, off an outside edge. However, he had managed to add 21 runs to his overnight tally.

As he settled into his innings, Kohli grew in confidence and control. He reached his fifty off 55 balls in the 39th over. At the 40-over mark, Kohli was batting on 57 off 58. The next 10 overs fetched India 105 runs, 65 of which came off the bat of Kohli in just 36 balls.
Kohli broke several records on the way to his 47th ODI hundred. He became the fifth batter in ODI history to reach 13,000 runs and the fastest to do so. The very next ball, he tucked a single off Shaheen Afridi to reach his century, his fourth consecutive 100-plus score at the R Premadasa Stadium in ODIs.
He hit a six off the last ball of the innings to remain unbeaten on 122 off 94 balls, taking India to 356-2 in 50 overs.
