Watch: Mohammed Siraj produced one of the great ODI new-ball spells as he sensationally took four wickets in his second over to effectively put the Asia Cup final to bed.

His opening bowling partner Jasprit Bumrah made the first inroad, dismissing Kusal Perera with the second ball of the match, before Siraj took centre stage in some style.

Pathum Nissanka was Siraj’s first victim, spooning the ball towards Ravindra Jadeja who claimed an excellent catch diving forward at point.

Siraj was wheeling away in celebration two deliveries later as an in-swinger trapped Sadeera Samarawickrama in front for a second-ball duck. Samarawickrama reviewed the decision but Hawk-Eye confirmed that the ball would have crashed into his leg stump. Sri Lanka’s No. 5 Charith Asalanka fell first ball, driving away from his body, gifting Ishan Kishan with the simplest of catches at cover to leave Siraj on a hat-trick.

Dhananjaya de Silva was the man handed the responsibility of dealing with the hat-trick ball as India packed the cordon with four slips as well included a man at a catching leg gully. The attacking field left gaps elsewhere and Dhanajaya picked up four runs as he pressed forward to drive a straight delivery through the vacant mid-on region. Given the attacking field, Siraj had to chase the ball to the boundary in vain himself.

After Siraj took a few moments to regather his breath, he sensationally claimed a fourth wicket of the over as Dhananjaya drove loosely at a full away-swinger and could only edge the ball through to KL Rahul behind the stumps, After two overs, Siraj had figures of 2-1-4-4 and Sri Lanka were 12-5. Four deliveries later, Siraj had his fifth as he comprehensively bowled Dasun Shanaka with another away-swinger that this time knocked over the Sri Lanka captain’s off stump. Siraj had completed a five-for, his first in ODI cricket, in just 2.4 overs. According to ESPNcricinfo, it is the joint fastest a bowler has taken a five-wicket haul in ODI cricket (where ball-by-ball data is available) alongside Chaminda Vaas’ effort against Bangladesh in the 2003 World Cup.
