This year’s Asia Cup will be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with Sri Lanka coming into the tournament as defending champions.They beat Pakistan by 23 runs in last year’s final to win their sixth title and first in the T20I format. This edition will be its 16th and it will played over the ODI format.
The six teams in the tournament will be divided into groups of three, and the bottom-placed team in each group will be eliminated after the first stage. The remaining four teams will then go into the Super Four stage where they will each play each other once. The top two sides from the Super Four will clash in the final, at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 17.
The Asia Cup is contested between the five ICC full member nations in Asia, plus the winner of the men’s Premier Cup. Nepal claimed victory in the qualifier tournament this year by beating UAE in the final. They will play Pakistan in Multan in the opening match of the competition.
With a busy international schedule over the next few months, the tournament will also allow India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh a chance to prepare for the upcoming World Cup. India will host the ten-team tournament which begins in early October.
