Stuart Broad announces retirement from professional cricket
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Stuart Broad announced his retirement from professional cricket while speaking to Sky Sports after the end of Day three’s play in the fifth Ashes Test at the Kia Oval today (July 29).

In a shock move, Broad, a 167-Test veteran, one of only two fast bowlers to have taken more than 600 wickets in Test cricket, announced his retirement from the game.

After Stumps on Day three of the ongoing fifth Ashes Test at the Kia Oval, Broad, who was unbeaten overnight – batting on two off two balls – came on to have a chat with the Sky Sports team, where he announced that he would be retiring from cricket after the end of this match and this Ashes series.

“Tomorrow or Monday will be my last game of cricket,” Broad said. “It’s been a wonderful ride, huge privilege to wear the Nottinghamshire and the England badge as much as I have, and I’m loving cricket as much as I’ve ever had. It’s been such a wonderful series to be a part of, and I’ve always wanted to finish at the top”.

While Test cricket has always been Broad’s finest format, he also used to be a regular for the England white-ball teams in the past and has 178 ODI wickets and 65 T20I wickets to his name.

Broad got to the 600-wicket mark in Tests in the fourth Test of the ongoing 2023 Ashes series and currently has 602 wickets to his name at an average of 27.66.
