Watch: Jonny Bairstow stumped Samit Patel after taking a brief pause in a County Championship game in 2014, a dismissal that is being compared to Alex Carey’s stumping of Bairstow in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s.

The Bairstow stumping on the fifth morning at Lord’s has thrown up a lot of similar instances from the past, ranging from current England coach Brendon McCullum’s run out of Muttiah Muralitharan in a Test match in Christchurch in 2008 when the latter was celebrating his partner’s century, to Bairstow’s similar stumping attempts in the first innings of the same Lord’s Test.
The latest incident that has resurfaced is from nine years back. Playing for Yorkshire in a County Championship match in 2014, Bairstow effected a stumping of left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Samit Patel while standing up to the stumps.
However, unlike a regulation stumping, Bairstow waited for a moment for Patel to lift his back foot in the air before taking the bails off.
Yorkshire had batted first in that match and scored a mammoth 532-9 declared with as many as four batters scoring more than 85. Bairstow himself had scored just two runs, however.

In reply, Nottinghamshire were rocked early. Patel had come out to bat at No.5 with the score reading 12-3. However, he was stumped off the bowling of Jack Brooks on what was just his second ball of the innings.
Patel left a length ball outside off which Bairstow, standing up to the stumps, collected cleanly. Patel was well inside his crease the whole time but lifted his backfoot for a split second as he completed the downswing of his bat. Bairstow, who was fixated on Patel’s backfoot, took the opportunity to knock off the bails at just the right moment.
Interestingly, the commentators on air during that dismissal appreciated Bairstow for his smart glovework and criticized Patel for being “lousy”. A video of Bairstow discussing the stumping after play has also been found, with Bairstow saying, “It’s within the rules of the game, and that’s how it is.”
Nottinghamshire eventually lost the game by an innings and 152 runs.
