Stuart Broad smashes a six off the last ball he faced in Test cricket
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Stuart Broad pulled Mitchell Starc for six over mid-wicket on what turned out to be the last ball he faced in his Test career on the fourth morning of the fifth Ashes Test.

Broad announced his retirement from professional cricket after stumps on day three after England had finished the day at 389-9 with Broad and James Anderson unbeaten overnight.

As Broad came out to bat one final time in Test cricket on the fourth morning, he was treated with a guard of honour by the Australian team and a roaring standing ovation from the Kia Oval crowd.

Starc was given the ball for the first over of the day, with Broad on strike. The first five balls of the over were rather uneventful, with Broad refusing to run and expose Anderson to Starc.

The last ball of the over, however, was a bouncer by Starc that sat up nicely for Broad to hit. He had already anticipated the short ball coming and had moved away to the leg side, making room for himself to swing his arms. And that is exactly what he did, connecting sweetly to send the ball sailing over the mid-wicket fence for six.

As it turned out, Anderson faced the first four balls of the next over by Todd Murphy, and was dismissed lbw trying to reverse sweep the fifth ball, which meant Broad was stranded at the other end, and his six off Starc turned out to be the last ball he faced in his Test career.

In his last ever Test innings, Broad finished not out on eight off eight balls.
