With seven wickets in hand, Australia needed 174 runs to win the first Test against England on day five. Chasing 281, they were in trouble at 227-8 when Nathan Lyon walked out to join Pat Cummins, with England strong favourites in the cricket betting at BoyleSports.
What followed was one of the finest displays by the lower-order batters. The duo stood tall for 12 overs and saw off the new ball before helping Australia script a memorable win. The turning point was arguably Cummins’ twin sixes in the 83rd over – Root’s 15th – of the innings.
Australia needed 51 at this point. Cummins dispatched Root’s third ball for a straight six, and hammered one over long-off two balls later.
Root’s over went for 14, and the momentum shifted towards the opposition camp. Cummins remained unbeaten on 44 in the end and Lyon on 16 as Australia won by two wickets to take a 1-0 lead.
