Watch: Mitchell Marsh nicked off in the second over after play resumed today at Headingley (July 8) to give away a huge wicket on day three of the third Ashes Test.

No play was possible before Tea as Australia looked to extend their lead over England and set up a fourth innings chase. Play resumed for one over, bowled by Woakes, before five o’clock, only for the rain to return, with the players forced off the field once more.

However, the shower was short and the players came back on after 15 minutes back in the dressing room, with Woakes resuming after Stuart Broad’s opening over.

His third ball was flat-batted through the covers for four by Marsh, who looked in the mood to build on his rapid first-innings century. But, with the penultimate ball of the over, Woakes struck.

Marsh made a late decision to leave the ball, having shaped up to play on the front foot. However, he was surprised by the extra bounce on the ball and some late swing, and was unable to get his hands out of the way quickly enough. As he attempted to lift his bat safely out of the ball’s path, it brushed his glove as it made its way underneath his bat handle, Jonny Bairstow making no mistake.

Marsh walked off without reviewing the decision in a potentially huge moment for the outcome of the game. With Alex Carey the last recognised batter, it left England one wicket away from Australia’s considerable tail with the lead still only 157.
