Trailing by 275 after the first innings, Australia’s misery continued in the second when they lost in-form Khawaja with 32 on the board. The left-hander, who had made 359 runs in seven innings before he walked out to bat today (July 21), was the first player to be dismissed for the visitors, departing in the 11th over but not before burning up a review for Australia.
Introduced into the attack in the 11th over, Wood struck in his second delivery when a round-the-wicket short ball hurried Khawaja into playing it away from the body. The ball fell into the hands of the wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, as England went up in loud appeal, confident that they had their man.
A bemused Khawaja, seemingly certain that he had not nicked the ball, walked up to his partner David Warner for a discussion and then opted for the DRS. The replays confirmed a thick edge on the way to Bairstow, and Khawaja had to walk back for 18.
Australia lost their first three wickets for 97 runs – the series scoreline currently reading 2-1 in their favour.
