Watch: James Anderson produced a beauty early on the morning of Day Three of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston today (June 18) that nipped back in and snuck through Alex Carey’s bat-pad gap to castle him and give him his 1100th first-class wicket.

Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja came together on Day Two with Australia’s score reading 220-5. Still more than 170 runs behind England’s first-innings score, they needed to build a long partnership, and that is exactly what they did.

Khawaja was calm like a monk at one end and Carey provided him able support, mixing caution with timely aggression. Australia finished Day Two on 311-5 with the pair of Khawaja and Carey unbeaten.

Heading into Day Three, England needed to break the partnership quickly. They started with Anderson and Moeen Ali as Australia came out with a positive mindset.

Nineteen runs were scored in the first four overs of the day. The first three balls of the fifth went for eight runs as Carey hit two boundaries off the second and third balls off Anderson.

The veteran, though, came back and had the last laugh as he got one to pitch just outside off from round the wicket and nip back in sharply, beating Carey’s defences and castling his stumps.

In the process, Anderson completed 1,100 first-class wickets as Carey departed for a well-made 66 off 99 balls. England will be hoping Anderson can add a few more to that tally over the course of this match and this series.
