Watch: Chris Woakes brought David Warner’s final Test match innings in England to an end early on day five at the Kia Oval with a beautiful delivery that took the outside edge.

Warner started the day on 58 not out, having piled on the runs with Usman Khawaja before the rain came yesterday. As he has announced that he will retire from Test cricket at the end of the next Australian season, this was set to be his last innings in England.

He successfully negotiated two overs from Stuart Broad, who is also playing in his final Test match. Broad has dismissed Warner 17 times in Test cricket – the joint third-most dismissals for a bowler-batter combination in Test cricket. However, Woakes’ second over brought an end to any hopes of finally registering a century in England on his last chance.

Woakes sent the ball down across the left-handed Warner, nipping the ball away drawing him forward. The ball just scratched the outside edge of the bat and carried through well to Jonny Bairstow.

This was the fourth consecutive – and last – time that Woakes dismissed Warner in Test cricket.

As England celebrated their first wicket of the morning, Warner took off his gloves and walked back to the dressing room. While he was left with some boos from the crowd, most gave him a standing ovation as he left the field.

That innings was Warer’s 37th in England. He’s scored nine fifties and averaged 26.48 across the four Ashes series he’s played away from home. The 60 runs he made at the Kia Oval came off 106 balls with nine fours.

Australia lost their second wicket two overs after Warner’s dismissal when Woakes snared Usman Khawaja, who unsuccessfully reviewed the plumb lbw. Mark Wood soon got Marnus Labuschagne.

Australia were 175-3 at the time of writing, with Steve Smith (11) and Travis Head (1) at the crease. They need another 209 to win.
