Ashes 2023: Ollie Pope ruled out of Ashes with dislocated shoulder, faces surgery

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Ollie Pope has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2023 Ashes with a dislocated shoulder, sustained diving in the field at Lord’s.

Scans following the Test have revealed the full extent of the injury, with the England vice-captain facing a summer on the sidelines after surgery.

Pope twice left the field due to injury, both times after diving to stop the ball. He was able to bat at his usual No.3 spot on both occasions. England were “bewildered” after Pope was forced to field in the second innings, despite injuring himself in the first.

England have not named a replacement in the squad for the Headingley Test, which starts on Thursday, July 7. Dan Lawrence is the reserve batter in the squad, and is set to slot in at No.3 in Pope’s place.

Pope, who averages 34.45 from 38 Tests, has struggled with shoulder injuries before, twice spending lengthy stints rehabilitating after dislocating his left shoulder. He has made 90 runs in four innings this series, having started the Test summer with a maiden double-century against Ireland at Lord’s.

England are 0-2 down in the Ashes after two close-run defeats at Edgbaston and Lord’s.
